Thriller sub genres - Which inspire you at the moment and why?

Thriller can be identified in many ways and here are some of the sub genres that thriller films have:
  • Crime
  • Action
  • Drama
  • Spy
  • Psychological
  • Conspiracy

The sub genre that inspires me the most is psychological thriller.

The reason why I like this genre is because of films like Fight Club, Momento, Requiem for a Dream, The Sixth Sense and the ever famous, Psycho.
In each oth these films we are shown the main characters lives and then at the end, everything is pieced together. This may sound rather simple and average, but what's different about a psychological thriller to an ordinary film is that they often have a twist ending in them. The twist shocks and surpises the audience as they didn't see it coming, it makes the audience think back and say "oh so that's why they did this" or "that's why we never saw..." ect. The audience is then forced to change their judgement of chracter in hand as this new information changes everything.

There are elements in the movies that foreshadow the twist; such as in The Sixth Sense when Bruce Willis' character is that in the movie you never see him open a door; he is simply shot from either inside or outside the room without entering himself. Also, whenever he speaks to her it's as if she can't hear him. Bruce Willis' character mistakes this that him and his wife are simply having marital problems but not until the end is it reveled to the audience and his character that he is infact dead, and a ghost.

This twist ending doesn't exactly happen in Requiem for a Dream, but the tist element isn't esential in creating a psychological thriller. Requiem for a Dream the film 'depits different forms of addiction, leading to the characters’ imprisonment in a dream world of delusion and reckless desperation that is subsequently overtaken and devastated by reality.' The trailer for this film shows what the film is about and it gives an insight as to how the use of camera work and editing helps demonstraight that the characters are in a world of their own. There are many aspects of this film that I adore but mainly the editing and the camera work are the best part of the movie.
